MLK Day Food Drive 2025

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.
Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
~ The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

WHAT:
The Light and Love MLK Day Community Food Drive will help stock the Amherst Survival Center’s food pantry and support food distribution to our community. The food drive will give us two purposes: a community event to honor MLK Day and a way to join in community to care for one another.

WHEN:
January 1, 2025 thru January 20, 2025, Martin Luther King Jr Day
Food delivery day: Monday, January 20, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

WHERE:
Food bins will be located in several locations around Amherst and donations will also be able to be brought to the Amherst Survival Center at 138 Sunderland Road in North Amherst on MLK Day, January 20 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

WHY:
As we start the new year, this drive provides us with an opportunity to honor Dr. King by bringing light, love, and food to our community.

HOW CAN YOU JOIN?
You can join the drive as an individual, a member of a group, a workplace, a team.
As an individual, you can ….

  • Donate food and deliver it to the Center on January 20 between 10am and 1pm.
  • Donate funds to the Center so they can purchase food.
  • Recruit your neighbors to donate to the drive, and deliver their food to the Center on January 20 between 10am and 1pm.
  • Recruit you co-workers and set up a food collection bin at work. Bring your workplace donations to the Center on January 20 between 10am and 1pm.
  • Recruit your organization, your book club, knitting club, and/or your friends to participate and deliver their food donations to the Center on Jan. 20 between 10am and 1pm.
  • Share your participation on social media, let your friends know!

As a house of worship, business, organization, club, or team you can …

  • Host a food collection box in your location and ask members to participate, and let us know so we can let people know and get your donations on January 20.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DONATE?
Please donate only food that has not expired. Glass containers are discouraged.
Currently, the most needed items in the food pantry are:

  • Canned beans – all kinds
